Increasing numbers of people are asking the question, "What will happen in 2012?" They've heard about the prophecies of end-time cataclysms, of catastrophic earth changes, of major transformations in human systems and within human beings themselves -- even if they haven't studied the predictions in detail or tried to sort it all out.
The truth is, no one knows with 100 percent certainty what is going to happen, but without doubt the countdown to 2012 is under way and is ticking with alarming urgency. The signs of wrenching change and maybe even apocalypse are flying at us fast and furiously.
Some say that what will happen in 2012 is pretty much the same thing that happens every year. There will be wars, political upheavals, and natural disasters -- just as there always are. People will be born, or will go to school, or marry (or divorce), find work, quit work, or die -- just as always. There will be joy and sorrow, pain and happiness. In other words, the world will crank along pretty much as it has for millennia.
Others say no, 2012 will be different. The wars and disruptions will be on a scale that will dwarf all that has come before in history. It will mark the end of one phase of man's existence and the beginning of an entirely new one, for good or bad. Or, it could bring the end of humankind, period.
What is nearly undisputed is that huge rips in space space and time are due to converge in 2012, particularly on or around Dec. 21 -- the winter solstice -- of that year.
That's the date that the famous Mayan Long Count calendar runs out, as if time itself were coming to an end. It is also when our solar system will come into alignment with the galactic equator, something that occurs only every 25,800 years. For the first time in human history, the earth and the rest of our solar system's planets and sun will move below the galaxy of which we are a part.
Such cosmic-scale shifts are bound to affect the human beings who live on earth in ways we can't yet fully comprehend. Yet, with diligent study and the use of reason, I believe it is possible to assemble, from the many puzzle pieces at our disposal, a pretty good picture of what will happen in 2012.
In other articles I am laying out details of what I think the most likely scenarios are. For now let's just say I am convinced we will indeed go through incredible trials and tribulations. But the catastrophes and disruptions of life will end, not the day after 12-21-12 necessarily, but eventually.
And for those who survive, the world will have been renewed and remade - cleansed, if you will. That is both my hope and my expectation.
